Another new homeowner story

One day early last week I got a little note on my front door from the power company. It was one of those generic messages that says "We'll be working on your power lines from this time to this time, so be prepared to have no power during those times." Okay. My first thought was to notice that the work was going to be done on Halloween and my second thought was to notice the time: 9:00-1:00. That's all it said.

What would you assume?

I assumed that the power company would be working from 9:00-1:00 at night. Yes, I realize now that maybe that thought was totally dumb to think, but my brain somehow latched onto the idea that construction people work on freeways at night when everyone is asleep and so the power company must be the same. Huh?

On the morning of Halloween I went walking with my friends as usual. My front door was locked, my back door was locked, and I went out through the garage. We left just before 9:00. After an hour of walking we all came back over to my house and I went to open the garage and nothing happened. Push button: nothing. Shake opener, push button: nothing. Slap opener against leg, curse, push button: nothing. And then like a flash it all became crystal clear. The power was off and would be off until 1:00 pm not 1:00 am as I had thought.

I explained the situation to my friends and we all laughed and Julie invited us all over to her house for an impromptu party. They were all so sweet about it and we all stayed in our pajamas and sat around and chatted and ate a yummy lunch while the kids played. Then at 1:00 I walked back home with Cindy and got ready for the day.

Sometimes it's good when you don't understand the power company notes: you may just get the morning off and a baked potato.

I love that you were so honest and admitted that a curse word snuck it's way in there. I think people need to be more honest like that, it makes me feel better about myself.

Thank goodness for good friends who you can laugh with and have good times with! And, yes, your honesty is one of the things I love about you. You have good self-esteem and you are very confident in who you are. I wish I was more like that!

Don't you just love those "duh" moments?! They always seem to bring me back down to earth, and remember that I'm not as smart as I think I am. Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome story! I feel like I totally could have made a mistake like that too. Maybe next time they should specify a.m. or p.m., thoughtless jerks!
P.S. My mother-in-law and I were talking about how much we love the A&E version of Pride and Predjudice and it reminded me of the time that we had the Pride and Predjudice marathon breakfast party at your apartment, good times!

That's totally something I would have done. Good thing you had some friends there you could hang out with. I probably would have called Matt sobbing and expecting him to get me out of the pickle. Sounds like it worked out for the better anyway. It's good to have mornings off every now and again. I tried to post about the pictures of Marcus in his tie but it didn't work so I'll write it here. LOVE IT! He looks so stinking cute. I love the little pose with his hand in his pocket. Any time you can dress up a toddler in adult looking clothes, it's a good thing.
