The Job Hunt

I just thought I'd give everyone an update on our job search. Tim graduates in December and it's recruiting season, so we've been VERY busy with resumes, cover letters, thank you notes, applications, and interviews. Here's how recruiting works in a nutshell: the firms come to BSU and tell the career center what they're looking for and when their prescreen and interview dates are, then we send in a resume and coverletter and the firms decide whether they want to interview the applicant on campus. After the campus interview the recruit either gets a "Thanks, but no thanks," letter or a phone call inviting him in for an office visit which really translates into an interview with 2-4 more people in the office. Then come the offers or the "Thanks, but no thanks," letter.

So far, things are going pretty well. As of today, we've applied to nine firms, made it through to the first round interview for all of them, and six have invited Tim back for office visits. Last night one of the firms had a dinner for their second round recruits and guests at a nice restaurant downtown, and today is Tim's office visit. On Friday, another firm is flying Tim to Portland for an office visit. It's all really exciting but also very stressful. We just hope some of these office visits make it through to the, "We really like you and will pay you and give you a really good benefits package if you please come work for us! Oh, and then your wife can finally have that house she's been wanting for so long, you know the one where she gets to paint and buy new furniture. And yeah, she can go on a shopping spree too."

Katie, that's exciting. My brother-in-law works as an acountant at L3 in Salt Lake City and he loves it. He worked for Arthur Anderson before the big scandal and didn't like that so much. Anyway, you should check out L3...then Mike will retire from the Air Force and get a job at L3 as an engineer and we can be neighbors again!!

It sounds so exciting. I think it's always fun when your life seems to have the possibility of several different paths. Good luck!

Adrianne: Yeah, we've heard that lots of people don't really like the big firms. We're actually looking at smaller firms with locations in Boise and a few regional firms with locations in Boise and Portland. Is L3 a firm? I'm glad your brother has a job he loves. Hey, we'd love to visit you guys in Oklahoma, but we'll settle for a meeting in Utah if that works better. I'd love to see you again!

Alecia: A few offers would be very exciting. We should hear from a few next week. Hey, did you get those pics yet?

Ann: Thanks. Good luck with your job hunt as well.

Timid Tripper: It is exciting, but it is also stressful. We just hope that we end up on a good path after it's all said and done. How's Mr. Timid Tripper liking his job? How are you like your role as Michelle Pfeiffer?

Alecia: I look forward to hearing all about your SF experience. I'd also like to hear some about your "J" experience(s). How's that going? he he he.

Well, if I were as skinny as Ms. Pfeiffer, things would be going much better. Dan's liking his job, but the learning curve is pretty steep, so he still feels pretty stressed regularly. It's the perfect place for him right now, so if he can just get over his perfectionism, I think he'll really start to enjoy it.
