Five years ago . . .

Journal Entry 9-11-01

This morning we were all getting ready for school. At around 8:00 the phone rang and Jen answered it. It was Jake calling for Aub but she had just gotten out of the shower. Jen kept talking to Jake and a look of horror came across her face and she said, "Really? Are you serious? When?" When she hung up, I asked her what was going on and she said, "The World Trade Center and the Pentagon have been bombed." We ran across the hall because they have a tv and watched in horror as the truth unfolded on the screen. Two passenger planes had flown directly into the towers and a third had smashed into the Pentagon. They had one of the planes crashing into the tower on tape and it was a surreal thing to watch.

My first thought was to call John, so I did. Bryan answered and said he was still asleep. I told him what had happened and he said their cable wasn't hooked up and he'd had no idea. I said we were all watching it in 43. 10 minutes later he and John showed up and we all sat as the horrible events unfolded before our eyes. I'll never forget watching the second tower completely collapse. It was so awful that I cried. Both buildings completely collapsed. It was surreal. Like an episode from some action movie. Horrible.

School was awful with people all around talking about what had happened. I was stunned and moved around silently . . . My sense felt dulled as they spoke of body parts strewn around and the toll of smoke inhalation. They showed the New York skyline shrouded in black smoke. It pierced me to see because I've been there and those places are real to me. Work was slow and when I got home I just wanted to go to bed because I felt so drained. I went to sleep utterly exhausted both physically and emotionally.

I too remember that day well. I was on business in Paris and was walking to a meeting when I received a phone call letting me know what was happening in New York... We got to a TV as soon as possible and watched as they replayed the video of the attack... I too thought..."How can this be?" "Is this some cruel Hollywood joke?" And Surreal... Oh my it couldn't be so!! I then found out that I was stranded in Paris... The next day I was to fly to England, but all air traffic was grounded... the world literally stood still... very very sad time for the world!!
