Another new homeowner story

A week or so ago the weather suddenly got downright chilly and for the very first time since we've lived in this house I turned on the heater. I walked over to my thermostat and I set the temperature and the heater came on and it never got warmer. Huh? I waited a few hours because I thought maybe the heater just needed to warm up (yes, I did just say that) after being dormant for so many months. The air blew and blew out of the vents but it was cold and not the delicious warm air I was craving.

I decided to investigate the furnace but honestly, I was way too scared to do too much investigating for fear I might break it or it might blow up. Let's be clear right now, the furnace is only like 3-4 years old and a Trane. This translates into "Why the heck isn't it working?!!"

I asked Tim to investigate but he is every bit as much the first time homeowner as I am. We realize this and are finally becoming okay with it :) Needless to say, he didn't know what to do either. I really didn't want to call the furnace guy to come out because I knew he would charge me money so I thought I'd call my father-in-law first. He was so great and came out soon after I called him and we examined it together. After some investigating and some discussion he mentioned that it was a gas furnace and did I have any other gas appliances in the house? Well, now that he mentioned it, I didn't think I did. I thought at that moment that maybe I ought to check my utilities file and see if I'd received any bills. Nope.

I called the gas company and sure enough, our gas had been shut off when the former owners moved and because I'd never needed the furnace, I'd had no idea. We're nice and warm and wiser now.

Funny thing - after reading your post, I turned on my heater for the first time and noticed that no hot air was blowing out. Turns out we just needed to re-light the pilot light.

Hmmm. Good story. I was actually thinking to myself through the entire story, "I bet she forgot to light the pilot light". But not turning on your gas is a good one too. Ah, the joys of owning a home. We are going to be fixing our roof in the next week or two. Yeehaw.

I can't believe you need your heater! I forget that it gets cold out there already. We are still having very warm weather--80's and 90's. I'm glad you figured it out so you could be warm.

Lexi: I'm glad your problem was something minor too :)

Megan: Yep, that was the first thing my father-in-law checked. Wow, the roof huh? Good luck with that one!

Adrianne: Tim's wishing we were still having warm temps. It's not too bad right now though--low 70's.

Alicia: Holy crap!! I love this blog thing. You are the second long lost friend who in just the past week has found my blog. Awesome!! I will e-mail you with and for updates.

Dad: Glad we can provide some form of entertainment :)

At least you didn't call out a furnace repair man. Then you might have felt like one of our old roommates (the one who did things like crashing into 3 parked cars).

I know, I really don't look at a ton of blogs, but I was particularly bored the other day and clicked on the link to your blog and wah-lah! It is so good to see you are doing well! You have such a cute family. I have been wondering how you have been. Did you know I lived in Boise for about 4 years and Caldwell for one? So I am familiar with the city you live in. I really liked it up there. It grows on you.
