Satisfying the urge

So, I think that a lot of you already know that we are gearing up for the adventure that is first-time-home-buying. We are saving like crazy people for a down-payment, and this Saturday we are taking a home-buying class that will hopefully help us qualify for some grants. We found a realtor we like and in the next few weeks we'll be finding a lender that we like, too. THEN we'll start looking at real houses like real adults. Holy crap!!!

Here's the problem. I have this sudden urge to decorate, to paint, to change frames and the pictures in those frames, to get rid of old college furniture that is now showing the stuffing, and to alter throw pillows that are covered in things I'd rather not know about. Tim got me a subscription to Oprah at Home and it has beautiful pictures of beautiful ideas, and then I picked up a Pottery Barn catalog with more lovely pictures. Then, last night we went to my cousin's house (they just bought it) and she's done lovely things with paint and carpet. Lovely things!

Now, I want to clarify that I'm not planning on going on a spending binge when we have a house. I'm not crazy! But, I love these magazines and my cousin's house for the IDEAS. The lovely and wonderful IDEAS of what I can do when I own a home. I can paint! The walls! The color that I want! Only a person who has lived in an apt. for nearly eight years can appreciate this fact.

And so I wait. And save. And gather magazine clippings of colors for new throw-pillows. And I keep the coupon that will save me $40 on my next custom frame. But today, I cracked. Just a little. I had to satisfy the urge just a teeny weeny bit. So, Marcus and I went to Home Depot and we bought little knobs to replace the ghetto ones that are currently on his dresser. The knobs were each less than a dollar, but they brought me so much joy and happiness. I think that Marcus liked them too. And they satisfied the urge . . . for now.

I lived in an apartment for about eight years too! I love having a house. We still have all our ghetto stuff though. We try to make little improvement each month like building little shelves and stuff but we just don't have the money to re-do everything. We have a couple of friends that have really nice things in their houses and I'm always a little embarrassed when they come over but then I think of all the money we are saving compared to them...I also have a whole binder of magazine clippings full of ideas. One day we will have a beautiful home. Anyway, now that my comment is a novel I will say that I always thought you did a great job decorating your house. You will love decorating your new home too.

Alecia: You can live vicariously through me by coming for a visit when we move in and need help painting! You have fabulous decorating taste so feel free to channel it through me :)

Adrianne: Little by little, right? You're so lucky to have a husband who builds furniture for you so that each piece is special. Oh, and here's to idea binders!

I can totally relate to that urge. Even though we are on our 3rd house in 2 1/2 yrs, i just went on a painting binge and painted my room and lexi's room and we're even going to put up chair rail in her room. Check out the blog for pics. But i have so many ideas and no idea how to do them all.

Oh no! You've got the itch!

Ha ha. Welcome to my world dear girl! I inherited the fixer-upper/ shop-a-holic gene from my mother. Kelly and I actually just took a furniture restoration class at the Home Depot two months ago. It is a challenging, fun and exciting thing owning a home. Just remember to take baby steps and keep the credit card hidden away somewhere safe.

Good luck!

Aub: It wasn't anything drastic. I just evened out all the layers in the back and got bangs (the long kind that sweep to the side and fall in your eyes which is sexy right?) I'm trying to grow my hair out but I needed a minor change, the bangs did it.

KATIE! Oh my gosh we are so alike it's not even funny! I LOVE North and South and I have been preaching to everyone I meet to buy it! Yes, it is (almost) as good as P&P...Ha ha! I even did an ENTIRE BLOG about it. Go into my September 2006 archives and look up "Attention Ladies". You are truly a kindred spirit!
