A Crafty Story

Last year Tim and I were the chair and co-chair of our ward's activities committee (not my favorite calling ever) and we were asked to figure out the scouting fundraiser and the Christmas Dinner. Umm, yeah. All was not well when we decided to COMBINE the two and kill two birds with one stone in the way of a silent auction at the Christmas dinner. People were not happy with our idea. NOT happy. But, we perservered and it was quite a success. I can say this last bit with some confidence because guess what they are doing again this year . . . the silent auction at the Christmas dinner!

Anyway, I couldn't think of anything to donate (Tim's offering to do someone's taxes) and then I was over at my cousin, Rachelle's, apt. and she had the cutest wood craft on a shelf. In these cute block letters it said "HOME" and it was painted all cute. Well, when she saw me drooling over her craftiness, she said, "I'm making a few more for Christmas. Do you want to get some stuff and make some with me?" Umm, YES! Little did I know what I was getting myself into.

She made me a list of what I would need and I thought that maybe I'd make one that said "FAMILY" for my kitchen (I have that big vacant space above my cupboards) and then I'd make one that said "HOME" for the auction. So, with starry eyes I headed out into the cold, dreary, BUSY, CROWDED, SOLD-OUT, world to get the stuff on Rachelle's list. Unlike Utah where there is a Michael's on every corner, we only have one and guess which letter they were out of? "M" a key letter. I looked for "W" but they were sold out of that one too (I guess everyone else had thought of my turn-it-upside-down idea). But the lady said they'd be getting a shipment that night. Okay. The next day I called and was put on hold for 10 minutes. 10 minutes people! I hung up. However, when I went down to the store again, they were still out and I was informed that the shipment had been a Christmas shipment. GRRR.

Anyway, I decided to try Jo-Ann's, but they only had a big Clearance bin of the letters I was looking for and it was filled with X's and Z's--the letters that people never use-- and then I had an epiphany--my M could wait, but I was on a deadline for my auction craft--did it really have to say HOME? No. There in the bottom of the clearance bin, a lone "P" beckoned to me. HOPE. So there you go, let the bidding begin.

Smooth one. They look pretty cute. You'll have to tell us how they fared at the auction.

Very cute craft idea--I'll have to try it! Now, explain to me why people were upset by the original silent auction again? Cause to me, that's better than just hitting people up for money--it's fun, you get to give to a good cause, and you usually get something cool out of the deal. And I'm not just saying this because I'm married to a professional scout executive either.

Amy: This ward is VERY tradition based, so the fact that we were changing anything was a cause for freaking out. Have you ever been in a ward like that?

Alecia: Are you sure I don't have KayLyn or Kimberlie? Hum, I better go consult my list . . .

Just kidding! I'll make note of your next year Christmas wish.

That's great Katie. I have the same problem here with trying to find things at the two craft stores in our town and finding everything sold out. I love your craft though. I would bid on it if I were in your ward.
